Title US Armed Forces: facilities in UK; Diego Garcia (1974)
Description Discussions regarding the US proposal for expansion of their facilities at Diego Garcia to provide a "US Navy Support Facility" designed to support a carrier task group or amphibious task group and to provide associated facilities for aircraft so to become a minor naval base. Refusal by HMG to sanction the expansion could put a severe strain on Anglo/US relations. The US Administration failed in their original hope of getting Congressional approval for the expansion earlier this year in the Supplementary Defence Budget for 1974; the House of Representatives were willing to approve it, but the Senate were not.
